C’mon Fabio, let Beckham play!

Today, Fabio Capello, the Italian Englishmen’s boss announced the 23 eligible players for the game against France, and David Beckham is part of them. For months now, there’s been hype about when he’d get his 100th cap, and I sure hope it’s now, because I’m tired of hearing about it.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Beckham. Sure I think he’s always been overrated as a player, but I always felt that when it came down to playing, he gave it all he had.

I was in Barcelona, Spain, during the 2006 World Cup, and I remember watching England’s games at the local pub. He was the reason they got so far, with his clinical passes, and you could tell he was genuinely saddened when they got ousted in the quarter-final by Portugal.

Now, I don’t see why they didn’t let him get his milestone sooner. Sure, Capello wants to put the best squad possible, especially since England not qualifying for the Euro this summer puts a lot of pressure on him to get the squad back on track. Yet, by delaying Beckham’s 100th cap, Capello is just letting the media buzz surrounding it last longer, which is surely a distraction for the team as a whole. Let’s be done with it, so that the focus can be shifted back to what really matters, winning.
