World Cup 2010 Group B C Day 2 Results

Greece vs South Korea Result
It was all South Korea in that match, who, aside perhaps from an early Greece chance, had control of the game for the entire 90 minutes and won 2-0. Greece, who lost all 3 games, goalless, in their first and only previous World Cup appearance in 1994, are still looking for their first World Cup goal.

South Korea Goals
After only seven minutes, a corner like free kick, provided an easy tap at the far post for Lee Jung-Soo to make it 1-0 for the South Koreans.

Manchester United’s very own Park Ji-Sung made it 2-0 after a Greece turnover allowed Park, the South Korean skipper, to go alone and slide the ball in the goal.

Argentina vs Nigeria Result
Despite an inspired performance by Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, dominant Argentina only needed one goal to beat Nigeria 1-0 in the second match of Group B. Lionel Messi had a great game, but Enyeama was there every time to stop the dangerous shots by the little Barcelona star.

Argentina Goal
We expected Messi, but it was Argentinean defender Gabriel Heinze that headed a corner in the top corner of the Nigerian goal in the 6th minute of the game. Argentina had a many menacing shots afterward but Nigeria’s goalkeeper, and for many, Man of the Match, stopped them all. Meanwhile, Nigeria had few chances, most coming in the second half, but couldn’t find the mark.

England vs USA Result
The most anticipated match of the day and arguably of Group C, was the fixture between England and the USA, that ended in a 1-1 bitter or welcomed tie, depending which side you were cheering for. England dominated possession, but in the end it was a game with few scoring opportunities, and a costly mistake by England goalkeeper Robert Green.

England Goal
England didn’t take long to open the scoring, a nice little through pass by Emile Heskey allowed Steven Gerrard, England’s skipper, to score Group C’s first goal at the 4th minute. At this point, it seemed like it would be a classic English game, with possession, control, and one or more goals by the Capello team. Robert Green had to spoil this…

USA Goal
At the 40th minute, as the USA was on a counterattack, which seemed to have been fairly well closed down by the English defense (some will argue that the central defenders could have closed down the ball handler quicker), USA’s playmaker Clint Dempsey made a 25 yard pass shot, that Robert Green has probably 1000 times before. Green knelt down, one knee on the ground, body in front of the ball, two hands ready to catch it, and then, oups, it slipped, tipped, deviated inside England’s goal. Poor shot, poor save, poor goal, but it doesn’t matter Clint took it, 1-1.

The second half would be more even matched. England played well, but couldn’t find that second goal. Wayne Rooney, who didn’t have a bad match, just couldn’t find any meaningful chances to score. Meanwhile, USA’s Jozy Altidore almost gave the US an unexpected win when he beat Jamie Carragher with speed on the left side, got in the box, shot, only to see Green parry the goal onto the goal post. That was close. It could have went from Unfortunate to Disaster for England.

For the interested, David Beckham was on the side line and bench, dressed in a nice 3 piece suit, supporting this countrymen.
