World Cup 2010 Group A Day 1 Results

South Africa vs Mexico Result
Host South Africa made their debut in the 2010 World Cup by playing against Mexico. While South Africa would have liked to win their first match in front of their fans, it was not meant to be. In the end, the result was a 1-1 tie between these two teams from Group A.

South Africa Goal
Siphiwe Tshabalal opened the score at the 55th minutes after being sent in partial breakaway in the middle thanks to perfect build up in midfield, and finishing with a perfect left shot strike in the top corner.

Mexico Goal
It looked like South Africa had a chance to win the match, until Rafa Marquez with 11 minutes left was left unmarked (along with two teammates) close range to equalize. The Mexican defender beat the offside to have a clear shot on goal.

France vs Uruguay Result
In the second match of Group A, we witnessed a somewhat boring affair between France and Uruguay that ended in a 0-0 tie. France was the dominant team in the first half, their best chance coming from a beautiful Ribery ground cross, that Sidney Govou was somehow unable to tap in.

It was more of the same in the second half, although the ever dangerous Diego Forlan had a good chance to pull Uruguay ahead. Thierry Henry and Florent Malouda, who both started on the bench (why???), came late in the game to infuse some energy to the France squad. Unfortunately, it was a little too late.

Day 2 games will include South Korea vs Greece and Argentina vs Nigeria in Group B, as well as the very anticipated match of England vs USA in Group C.
